Beta test Office On Demand

We just completed the first releasable version of Office On Demand (tentative name), which is a cool new way to save files directly from Microsoft Office to your Box. Currently it’s compatible with Word, Powerpoint, Excel, and Access both in 2007 and 2003 (and XP/Vista!).

A small “Save to Box.net” button will appear as a button in your toolbar section of the Office app - upon clicking, you’ll be able to login and upload your file to Box. Extremely useful if you’re jumping between computers or devices. We’ll be adding Box Network sharing functionality soon as well.

Download the first version here: http://www.box.net/shared/m0jjh7n610

Oh yeah, this feature was built using our API - so it’s something that can be built for any other software application or service ;-). If you’re interested in making a Box plugin for your favorite software application, let us know.

This would be great for Macs. And I like the idea of the open command. I use Box in leu of a jump drive for school and having a plugin for Word for Mac would be fantastic!

Yes, we need Open from Box.net as well. I will be very excited about this if it can be made a two-way street.

Do you mean something other than the zoho integration

    @ Aaron,
Are you asking in reference to an Open command? I want to bypass Zoho all together and just Open and Save documents from the several PC’s I work with that have MS Office installed on them. Sort of a virtual document drive.

I much prefer a desktop application for most of my Word Processing and Spreadsheets, but would like the flexibility of saving to and opening fromBox.net from all my computers. Zoho is a great product, and I do use it from time to time, but I am more comfortable with the flexibility, speed and accuracy in printing of my current Desktop solutions.

Since this feature was made with Box Enabled, we’re kind of looking towards the development community to build out apps that they think would be cool to have a ’save to box’ function. If you know anyone that has experience with Open Office plugins, have them email us!

Yeah this would be great if you could open from. To me this nothing to get excited over at all. If you could use the open command to open doc’s on box.net then ! would get excited.

If you do that i will move my wife to this so she could access her files anywhere like a network drive. Very easily.

Don’t get me wrong I think Box.net is the best, just not to excite over what I saw with this. To me you are 50% there.

  14. [...] Box - Office on Demand - a plug-in to upload a Word document to Box (online file storage) via the menu bar in MSOffice. Another feature (following in the footsteps of similar service, Omnidrive) is that you can click on a the edit document function in Box and edit the MSOffice document in Zoho (online office) and save it in Zoho, or save it back to Box in one click. Basically you can have a web version of a word document stored in box, and still edit it offline, or edit it online with Zoho. BTW, Slideaware is doing something similar with just Powerpoint. Mac Office support would be great! This product has so much potential; I love it. I have been using WebDAV for a while now. It’s a great idea, but slow… office support might help speed things up.

    Thanks!

  16. A great plugin, and a big step towards a true WebOS -it all revolves around the storage. Now to integrate with other web apps, to allow directly reading and writing to your Box, and we’re a huge step closer to becoming desktop independent. Then it also imo starts to add value to the price you’re now charging -right now I’m still comparing it with the cost of flash (USB) storage, and unfortunately compared like this it loses out. Great work, and keep going!

This is very useful. Thank you.

What we users want next is the ability (maybe a firefox extension?) to drag and drop files from the desktop or any folder on our computer, directly to the box.net account.
