Introducing Box.net/lite

So a few days ago we were sitting around wondering how we could make it easier to add files to your Blog, Myspace, or Facebook notes. Then came blog posting functionality. This seems to work fairly well, and we’ve seen some decent activity from it, but it was really is only useful if you fully already use Box.net and understand its purpose as a digital locker. Then came Box LITE. Box LITE is an incredibly simple and straight-forward way to upload any file and post it anywhere that accepts embed codes. The cool thing is, if you have an account, the file will be added automatically to your Box, and if you don’t have one, an account will be created for you. Here’s an example of what Box LITE generates (click the button to view the file):

share your files at box.net

As with most things here, Box LITE is still a work in progress, so any feedback you have would be much appreciated.

To start posting, check out: http://www.box.net/lite - and be sure to tell your friends!

I’d appreciate if I could customize layout of blog-posts. You know, center-aligned picture would be better, at least for me…

Possible issues uploading files with Safari? My initial tests loading files with Safari seemed to return a perpetual “loading…” screen with no real activity. Can anyone else confirm?

Per our conversation, I believe everything should be working now. Please let me know if you experience any other issues.

  10. Is this supposed to download files as opposed to embedding them? I notice once I click on this sample link (using Safari) that the image does not open in my browser. Rather, it fully downloads in the background and then opens itself using my default image viewer. Is this the way it is supposed to function?

Same here: Camino downloads the JPG file…

    August 28th, 2006 at 3:59 pm

  12. Aaron Says:

Yes, this is the plan… The download button’s role is to offer the original content to the viewer - whether it be a document, video, zip, or image. If you’re looking to embed the image in your browser, try doing the photo embed rather than the button embed. Thakns!

  13. Will Box ever allow direct embedding of file, rather than hotlinked thumbnails? I think if you offered this, you’d have it made. I was about to send an email off to all my friends using the likes of PhotoBucket and whatnot saying to move to Box, but I don’t think I can safely recommend that if full embedding is not available.

Allowing easy embedding into myspace and facebook is a great idea, but I don’t think it will take unless you offer this. Most people size down their photos before uploading them and won’t want them thumbnailed. Or downloaded and opened in a different app when clicked.

May I also recommend a link on the Lite page to upload a new file once you’re done? After uploading a file using Lite, I found I cannot upload another file or go back to the Lite front page without just going into the URL. Perhaps make the Box Lite logo linked to the box.net/lite page?

  14. Aaron Says:

    Daniel,

Thanks for the suggestion. We should definitely a way to upload again. In terms of a photobucket replacement, I’m not sure that’s really the market we’re going after. Box.net’s longer-term vision is not that of a photobucket type service. Allowing users to directly embed files (without a flash player, for example) for free puts us in a very different category of service. In the coming weeks I think it’ll be a bit more obvious how Box.net LITE fits into our strategy. Btw, if you do upgrade your account to a premium/pro plan we offer you direct links to your files :)

Have you thought about having a recyling bin at the top of your “MyBox” I was trying to delete stuff today and relized how tedious of a process this can be. Then you could drag useless files into you recycling bin and maybe after 24 hours what was in your recycling bin would delete. Just and idea

    August 29th, 2006 at 10:19 pm

  18. Tom Says:

Kinda of off topic I do agree with Jared’s post about deletes being a little long-winded - what about making deleted one of the options available from the drop-down box for each file?

    OK
Now on topic - This new box.net Lite is very cool and I have already spread the word to several people. One suggestion … i like that it drops the file to your BOX however I didn’t really like that it dropped it to the root of my BOX. Any chance we could have it place them in a specific folder like “BoxLite” and if it’s your first time/use of it the folder is automatically created, but if you already have a folder with that name it will add the shared files to it.

    Just a suggestion.
    Great new service!

  19. Aaron Says:

    Tom,

Both suggestions are good. We’re still experimenting with Box lite, but if it’s something we pursue as a longer term strategy, we will definitely have way to select a folder and likely even tag the file.

Just tried out Box/lite and I have to say I love it! Keep up the awesome work guys. I also second Tom’s idea of an easier way to delete files and folders. It’s a little tedious having to click on the arrow–>edit–>delete when you have tons of files to delete. But other than that, LOVE the service!

This Lite is really good, my friends liked it because they don’t have to signup for an account (I have no idea why they don’t want to signup… it take only a few seconds)

Personally I liked the old Box.net because I can upload at 60kB/s using drag and drop, but box.net/lite only uploads at 20~25kB/s. It’s much faster uploading through original Box.net and there’s no 10MB limit per file if I spend a few second to login.

Anyhow, my friends are just wondering how long will the files be kept on the server? and how much bandwidth the file will get?

P.S> It’s not about Box.net/lite but I want to ask that my premium account is due on april next year… will my all files be deleted as all of them are over 10MB and over 1GB in total?
